Research & Writing
During my master's program at Lamar University, I have done some research on topics that resonated with my interests and passions. In the future, I plan on expanding on these topics and publishing much more in-depth writing.
Neuroplasticity Through Music: The Developmental Outcomes for Children with Developmental Delays and Neurodivergent Conditions
I chose this research because of my work as a private music instructor and Registered Behavior Technician. Day to day, I see how children with developmental delays respond to rhythm, melody, and structured musical routines. I wanted to understand the science behind what I was witnessing. One question I asked myself was, how does music actually support cognitive, motor, language, and emotional development?
This research directly affects my teaching in special education. It helps me design lessons that support neurodivergent learners, integrate evidence‑based strategies, and use music as a tool for communication, regulation, and growth. It also influences the platform I’m building, which aims to make music learning and communication more accessible for all musicians, including those with diverse developmental needs.
“Race Records” and other ways Black Music was shaped by commercial advertising in the 1920-30s
I chose to study the history of “race records” because so much of today’s music industry still reflects the racialized marketing structures created in the 1920s and 30s. As a Black woman working in the music business, I wanted to understand the process of how Black music was shaped all the way up until modern day. Early advertising, cataloging, and industry assumptions heavily affected this journey for Black music in all genres.
This research helps me recognize the historical barriers that still influence genre labels, artist visibility, and commercial pathways today. It also informs my work with young musicians, constantly reminding me to teach music history honestly and to advocate for more equitable, accurate representation in the industry, not only for all marginalized groups within the industry.
